The New York Yankees – One of the Greatest Teams in Baseball
Officially renamed the “Yankees” in 1913, Major League Baseball’s American League New York Yankees remain one of the most successful clubs in the history of baseball. With 27 World Series championships and 40 American League pennants, the Yankees have had some of the best and most celebrated players like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra help the franchise achieve baseball greatness.
The club was founded in 1901 in Baltimore, Maryland as the Baltimore Orioles. When they moved to New York in 1903, the team came to be known as the New York Highlanders. Since they were members of the American League, the team was called the New York Americans. After moving into the newly rebuilt Polo Grounds in 1913, the name Highlanders was dropped and replaced by the Yankees, a nickname created by the New York Press. The team was sold in 1915 to new owners. One of the owners, Jacob Ruppert, inherited a brewery fortune that eventually enabled the team to attain more success and prestige.
The acquisition of pitcher-turned-outfielder Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox in 1920 helped lead the Yankees to four World Series titles. The popularity of the game exploded largely due to Babe Ruth’s influence. In 1923 the Yankees moved to Yankee Stadium which seated an astounding 58,000 people. Babe Ruth hit a home run in the first game played in their new stadium. The Yankees became such a dominant team that the New York Giants eventually left the city and moved to San Francisco.
During the 1927 season the Yankees’ lineup became known as “Murderers’ Row” and considered one of the best in the history of baseball. The first six hitters in the team lineup were the talented Earle Combs, Mark Koenig, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Meusel, and Tony Lazzeri. The Yankees won 110 games with only 44 losses and swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1927 World Series.
From 1936 to 1939, the New York Yankees won an unprecedented four straight World Series titles with the help of their new star Joe DiMaggio. In 1941 DiMaggio set an MLB record with a 56-game hitting streak. Shortly after the Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1941 World Series, DiMaggio and many Yankees players decided to serve in the military because of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entering WWII.
The 1950s ushered in the Stengel era in which the Yankees won the World Series five consecutive times from 1949-1953 under manager Casey Stengel. He became the only person to manage a team to five consecutive World Series championships. During his twelve seasons as the Yankees manager, Stengel’s teams led by players like center fielder Mickey Mantle, pitcher Whitey Ford, and catcher Yogi Berra, won ten pennants and seven World Series titles. In 1957 the Yankees became New York’s only baseball team when the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers left for California.
During the early 1960s outfielder Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle were in a race to hit the most home runs. In 1961, Maris hit 61 home runs for the Yankees and beat Babe Ruth’s single-season record of 60 home runs set in 1927. The Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds in the 1961 World Series and also won the 1962 World Series defeating the San Francisco Giants in seven games. The rest of the decade found the team in decline and the Yankees wouldn’t become serious contenders again until 1974.
In 1973 investor George Steinbrenner became the principal owner of the Yankees. He had Yankee Stadium renovated and started the modern era of free agency after signing star pitcher James “Catfish” Hunter away from Oakland. He hired Billy Martin as manager, and even though the team reached the 1976 World Series, they were swept by the Cincinnati Reds. But the Yankees came back the following year to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers and win the 1977 World Series championship.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the New York Yankees would see a decline in performance and success. They would rise again in 1996 defeating the Atlanta Braves in the World Series, ending an 18-year championship drought. The Yankees then swept the San Diego Padres in the 1998 World Series and the Atlanta Braves to win the 1999 World Series. Their dynasty continued into the new millennium as they beat the New York Mets to win the 2000 World Series, and earned the franchise’s 27th World Series championship when the Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2009 World Series.
