Salary Cap for Baseball?
What do you think? Should Baseball put in a salary cap? Some teams are good but can’t afford to get those one or two major players to be great. The Florida Marlins are the perfect example. Low cap. Good young talent. All they need is a good power hitter and a starter and maybe a closer. A bad example is the New York Yankees. They have the 4 biggest contracts. And since they have a potential for being the ultimate team to play for a large salary would sweeten the deal. Who wouldn’t want to play for NYY? It’s just not fair.
It’s too late to institute a salary cap in baseball. Where do you set the cap? You’ll have to set it at least as high as the Yankees payroll. By setting it that high you’re not going to change anything since the Yankees were able to sign A.J., C.C. and Tex while actually DECREASING their payroll from last season.
If you set it lower than the Yankees payroll then what are you going to do, make the Yankees cut players to get under the cap?
I think there’s one of two things you can do to improve baseball (maybe both of them together). 1) Institute a salary minimum to force the cheap owners that are pocketing the luxury tax money to put the money back into their team. 2) Increase the luxury tax. Let the Yankees spend all of their money if they want. Just make it so that the more they spend, the more they’re taxed.
